Today’s top offer: Infectious pop by bunch of Scandinavian lovelies, fronted by cute, kooky blonde poppet.
I know what you’re thinking, but The Cardigans are nowhere to be seen on this fine CD… This is Alphabeat, and what fine purveyors of beats they are too.
This cheesy record could quite easily have become a trashy euro-pop flop. But as we all know, there’s plenty of room in this world for a bit of cheese-mongering, and Alphabeat are so endearing, you can’t help but love them.
Even the most seasoned music snob couldn’t fail to like something about this great collection of Danish pop stompers.
It may be true that the singles released from the album (‘Fascination’ and ‘10,000 nights’) really stand out from the crowd, but there’s plenty of scope for 80s-style disco dancing through the rest.
I can’t get enough of the gorgeously fresh male/female duet of voices. The cheeky harmonies and sing-along lyrics will appeal to anyone hankering after their next Eurovision fix, but don’t be fooled; This Is Alphabeat is full of perfectly formed little gems, purposefully written to be well structured, well performed, simply produced and completely addictive.
Whether you take it all with a pinch of salt, or find a deeper meaning amidst the anthemic happiness, I challenge you to not sing like a drunken uncle at a wedding when you hear the first track; an unashamed musical band biography entitled ‘Fantastic Six’.
Approach with caution: MAY CAUSE UNCONTROLLABLE CHEERINESS!
