West Sussex rape charity receives police donation

Rape victims in West Sussex are set to benefit from a cash boost.

The 15-hundred pounds comes from the Sussex Police Property Act Fund.

It's being given to the Life Centre - a Chichester-based charity.

Director Maggie Ellis describes the work they do;

"We provide specialised counselling support to people who've been through any form of sexual violation, whether that was many years ago or recently.

"It doesn't matter what age they are. It doesn't matter what gender they are.

"And we do that through a telephone helpline."

And she says all donations are vital to help their work continue.

"Our funding comes from all over the place and sometimes on a wing and a prayer.

"We very much need charitable donations.

"Sussex Police just giving us this donation at the moment is wonderful."

But, warns Maggie Ellis, more cash is always needed.

"It costs us around £200,000 a year just to run existing services.

"To be honest with you we would love to have more money to extend our services because there is such a desperate need for specialist help for people who've been through rape or other forms of sexual abuse."

Life's confidential helpline no is 01243 779196.

There's also 0800 2797273, which is a freephone number for under 18s.
